Think of it like draining life/HP from your enemy. Players cane get Vampirism stat from items you pick from slain enemies. You get some HP back based on your attack depending on the percentage of Vampirism you have. There's a lot of flexibility to do whatever strategy you want for chapter 4 so long as you plan your fights around what resources you need, when you need them, and the difficulties associated with the different enemy abilities in each chapter. Vampirism in Loop Hero is a stat bonus that will give you HP which is much-needed during combat. I think I could have not built the Smithy and Smelter and have had enough resources for the Cemetery, Crypt, and Academy to get Necro and Suburbs. On my most recent run after finishing 3rd boss I was able to build all the way up to Intel Center, Forest, River, Smithy, Smelter, and Library and have enough left over to go back and make Kitchen and Refuge if I wanted to do chapter 4 with Rogue. From my experience you generally just need to cap metal. Once you eventually beat chapter 4 your meta progression begins to scale out of control, so I find this to be more fun, a great way to extend the game, and to hone knowledge of mechanics and strategies. This is my experience on runs where Supply items are left behind, and from doing the 4 expedition challenge where you start with a fresh save and try to beat each chapter in a single expedition. Eventually the jumps in attack speed are so great that so long as you brought Beacon, then they're too good not to take.

Adding in some Counter can go well with Buckler, but Evasion is generally better, especially against the bosses. Loops 3-15ish Vampirism overtakes HP Regen, especially when you get Blade of Dawn.

Loops 1-3: HP Regen, Damage All/Magic Damage, Defense Warrior is a huge balancing act and it depends a bit on what you're fighting to determine whether magic damage vs damage to all or defense vs evasion is better.
